The keynote speaker will be Prof. Luis Javier Pentón Herrera, an award-winning scholar in language and literacy education, joined by members of VISION and representatives of DEO.

Luis Javier Pentón Herrera is Professor at VIZJA University. He is also an award-winning Spanish and English educator and best-selling author. In 2024, he was named TESOL Teacher of the Year by TESOL International Association and National Geographic Learning. He is also a Fulbright and English Language Specialist with the U.S. Department of State. His work focuses on identity, emotions, well-being, social-emotional learning, storytelling, refugee education, and language and literacy education.

During the seminar Prof. Luis Javier Pentón Herrera will talk about social-emotional learning (SEL) in relation to multilingual education and its contribution to improving the quality of teaching and learning. He will begin by introducing SEL in the context of language education for multilingual learners, emphasizing the importance of emotion, relationships, identity, and belonging in linguistically diverse classrooms. Then he will turn to SEL in multilingual teacher education by reviewing what research has shown so far about how teacher preparation addresses educators’ social-emotional competencies in multilingual contexts. From there, Professor will turn to SEL for multilingual teacher education, considering what next steps are needed to integrate SEL more fully and systematically into the preparation of teachers working with multilingual learners. He will end the presentation by arguing that SEL is not an added extra, but a key dimension of educational quality, as it can support more inclusive, responsive, and effective multilingual education.

The seminar will be streamed live and recorded. The recording may be made available on the websites of VIZJA University and on its social media channels. Participation in the event constitutes acknowledgement that the seminar is being recorded. Sharing one’s image and voice is voluntary — participants may take part in the meeting without turning on their camera and/or microphone.
